Vintage Nuu-chah-nulth or Nootka Whaler's Chief's hat. Made from cedar or spruce root or bark, twined and woven into the traditional conical form. The embroidery illustrates four groups whale hunting in canos and two eagles. Among Northwest Coast tribes, the only whale-hunters in recent centuries were the Nuu-chah-nulth (coastal mountain) groups including the Nootka and the closely-related Makah of nearby Cape Flattery, Washington.
